The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival will showcase its cultural heritage at the 2026 Notting Hill Carnival as part of a strategic effort to position Tenerife as a premier cultural destination for the British market.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is set to reach a global audience after confirming its participation in the next Notting Hill Carnival. Scheduled for August 31, 2026, this appearance at Europe’s largest street festival marks a new strategy for the city: moving beyond the traditional "sun and sand" tourism model to establish Tenerife as a major cultural destination for the British market.

The Tenerife delegation will be led by the current Carnival Queen, Carla Castro. She will parade alongside a batucada (drumming group), showcasing her elaborate "Icónica" costume, a masterpiece of textile design by Alexis Santana. The invitation to London follows a period of cultural exchange that began when the director of the Notting Hill Carnival served as a judge at the most recent Tenerife Queen election gala.

The Santa Cruz City Council, working alongside the Island Council of Tenerife and the Rosti Family Group, views this as a key part of a long-term plan. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Councilor for Festivities Javier Caraballero believe this showcase is vital for sharing the city’s unique festive identity with the world. Furthermore, Island Councilor for Culture José Carlos Acha highlighted the economic importance of the partnership, noting that the UK remains one of the most important tourist markets for the Canary Islands.

For local designers, this trip is a chance to showcase the complex craftsmanship behind the costumes. By presenting his work at Notting Hill—which attracts over a million people—Alexis Santana hopes to prove that the Santa Cruz Carnival is a world-class cultural industry. For Carla Castro, serving as an ambassador is a significant honor, as she prepares to represent the spirit and traditions of Tenerife on one of the world’s most influential stages.
