Santa Cruz de Tenerife is distributing 150 new shelters across its 106 cat colonies to provide stray cats with protection from the elements and dedicated spaces for care.

Stray cats in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who are cared for in various cat colonies across the city, are getting new shelters. These will give them places to eat, play, and stay safe from the cold or heat.

Carlos Tarife, head of the city council's Department of Health and Animal Welfare, announced to DIARIO DE AVISOS that 150 new small houses have been bought. These will be slowly distributed among the cat colonies.

He added that these shelters are part of a contract with Gesplan, the company managing the cat colonies. Gesplan staff and city technicians will work together to distribute them to all municipal cat shelters in the city's five districts.

Tarife also noted that each house will feature the city council's logo. They will offer cats a new space for care and protection from the weather, especially cold or rain.

Each cat colony will receive at least one new small house, he said. However, colonies with more cats might get additional platforms, with Gesplan staff deciding on the exact distribution.

Currently, the city has 106 cat colonies, home to 1,853 cats. Three of these are fully authorized, 48 have temporary approval while sterilization work is underway, and 28 are awaiting authorization.
