Santa Cruz Authorities Boost Security in Somosierra Following Vandalism Wave

Authorities have launched an urgent security operation in the Somosierra neighborhood following a wave of vandalism late last July. The attacks resulted in the destruction of sixteen dumpsters, six cars, and several trees. According to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, the area is now being monitored by a mix of uniformed and plainclothes officers, a strategy officials say has successfully curbed criminal activity.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, Public Safety head Gladis de León, and district councilor Santiago Díaz recently met with the Somosierra Activa neighborhood association to discuss the situation. The National Police are currently investigating the fires and are urging anyone with information to come forward. Officials stressed that filing formal complaints is essential for the investigation and noted that witnesses can remain anonymous.

The meeting also highlighted broader concerns among residents, who reported ongoing issues such as petty drug trafficking, vehicle break-ins, and abandoned cars cluttering the streets. Neighbors also raised concerns about the local municipal reception center and poor street lighting in Somosierra and García Escámez, noting that the lack of visibility at night makes them feel unsafe.

This situation underscores the difficulty city councils face in balancing public safety with social services in busy neighborhoods. To restore a sense of security, the city has committed to maintaining the increased police presence and keeping open lines of communication with local groups. As part of the effort to improve the area, the city will also replace the trees destroyed by the fires on Elisa González Street.
