Santa Cruz Advances Long-Stalled Zurita Bridge Redevelopment Project
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has initiated the public review process for a privately funded redevelopment project near Zurita Bridge that aims to revitalize the area with new housing, improved pedestrian infrastructure, and additional public parking.
The redevelopment of the area around the Zurita Bridge in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reached a key milestone. The City Council’s Urban Planning Department has officially begun processing the UA-SP.4 project, a plan designed to revitalize a block that has been stalled for years. The project is being managed privately and is currently open for public review following the initial approval of its land-reallocation plans on February 27.
Beyond building new homes, the project aims to improve local mobility and public spaces. Key improvements include reorganizing Padilla Alley and widening the sidewalks on Islas Canarias Avenue to address pedestrian congestion caused by the tram. The plan also features a new public square built over an underground parking garage, which will help ease the parking shortage in the Salud-La Salle district.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez highlighted that this project addresses a long-standing neighborhood request at no cost to the city, as it is funded entirely by private investment. Zaida González, the Councilor for Urban Planning, added that the new residential units will be a welcome addition to the city’s housing supply.
The project’s final approval now depends on the outcome of the public review period and the completion of the urbanization plans. If the administrative process stays on schedule, the City Council expects work to begin soon, finally resolving years of uncertainty for this busy part of the capital.
