San Sebastián de Tejina Cultural Group Announces Centenary Celebration Program
The San Sebastián de Tejina Cultural Group has unveiled a year-long program of events to celebrate its 2026 centenary, honoring a century of contributions to the social and artistic life of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
The San Sebastián de Tejina Cultural Group has launched an ambitious year-long calendar of events to celebrate its centenary in 2026. Through these celebrations, the organization aims to highlight its enduring role as a cornerstone of the social and artistic life in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
The institution is much more than a musical group; it has been a driving force in the local community since it was founded in 1926 by residents of the El Ramal area. From its humble beginnings rehearsing in José Alejo’s "Salón de Plátanos," the group has grown into a cultural hub that now includes a theater, library, radio station, and music school. Following the formation of its first Board of Directors in 1948, the band became an essential part of local identity, playing a key role in traditions like the Tejina Hearts festival.
The commemorative program, supported by the La Laguna City Council’s departments of Culture and Festivities, was officially introduced at the Casa de los Capitanes. The launch featured a series of workshops led by experts including Javier Llopis, Orestes de Armas, Adán Delgado, Eloísa González, and Francisco García, which concluded with a performance at the Teatro Unión Tejina.
Throughout the centenary year, the group will reflect on its history of achievements, including mid-20th-century awards in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and its first national victory at the 2009 Dosbarrios Band Competition. The centerpiece of the celebrations will occur during the San Bartolomé festivities, where the band will perform alongside Los Sabandeños—a meeting of two of the most influential musical groups in the Canary Islands.
