The San Miguel de Abona City Council has launched a financial aid package of 335,000 euros to assist local students with back-to-school expenses, prioritizing families facing economic hardship.

The San Miguel de Abona City Council has launched a new financial aid package to help families cover back-to-school costs. As detailed in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this initiative aims to support students from early childhood through to postgraduate studies, ensuring that financial hardship does not prevent anyone from continuing their education.

The council has divided the funding into three categories:

  • Compulsory Education (Infant, Primary, and Secondary): A total of 185,000 euros is available, with individual grants of up to 600 euros per student.
  • Baccalaureate and Vocational Training: A fund of 62,000 euros is available, with a maximum of 900 euros per student.
  • University and Postgraduate Studies: A fund of 88,000 euros has been set aside. However, there is currently some confusion regarding the maximum grant amount for this group, as the official documents contain conflicting figures ranging from 300 to 1,700 euros. Applicants should wait for the council to issue an official correction before proceeding.

To qualify, applicants must have been registered residents of the municipality for at least one year. Additionally, the family’s per capita monthly income must not exceed 900 euros (1.5 times the IPREM). The selection process will prioritize those in vulnerable situations, including large families, single-parent households, and families with members who have a disability rating of 33% or higher.

Applications must be submitted within 15 business days of the official publication date. These grants are intended to help with essential costs such as books, school supplies, transportation, and, for higher education students, accommodation. By providing this support, the council aims to reduce educational inequality and ensure that rising costs do not hinder a student's academic success.
