Healthcare facilities in San Miguel de Abona are facing a crisis this summer, with two local health centers operating without proper air conditioning, according to Diario de Avisos. This ongoing issue has made conditions uncomfortable and highlights a breakdown in coordination between local authorities and the Canary Islands Health Service.
At the Guargacho health center, the air conditioning has been broken since early June. Frustrated by two months of inaction, the local neighborhood association has started a petition demanding urgent repairs. Meanwhile, at the municipality’s main health center, staff and patients are relying on industrial fans. These fans are not only ineffective against the heat but also create so much noise that they disrupt daily medical consultations.
The Tenerife Primary Care Management has admitted that a major upgrade is needed and has promised to install a centralized air conditioning system. However, they have not provided a timeline for the work. As a temporary fix, the agency plans to provide portable cooling units.
Frustrated by the slow response from the regional government, the San Miguel de Abona City Council is considering stepping in. Although the Ministry of Health is responsible for maintaining these buildings, the City Council has offered to pay for the repairs itself. Local officials are currently waiting for legal advice to see if they can fund the work now and seek reimbursement from the regional government later. This situation underscores a recurring problem where bureaucratic delays directly impact the quality of care provided to the public.
