San Miguel de Abona Faces Procurement Crisis as Tow Truck Service Remains Stalled for Five Years

The municipality of San Miguel de Abona has been left without a tow truck service for five years due to administrative delays and a failure to secure an impound lot, according to local opposition officials.

Public services in San Miguel de Abona are under fire again following reports of administrative delays that have left the town without a tow truck service for five years. During the latest council meeting, the Socialist group (PSOE) revealed that this is part of a wider procurement crisis, with nearly 250 municipal contracts currently stalled.

The opposition argues that the lack of a tow truck service is a failure of planning, noting that the project was included in municipal budgets as far back as 2020 and 2021. PSOE spokesperson José Carlos Rodríguez criticized the Coalición Canaria government, pointing out that while officials acknowledged the need for the service years ago, they have yet to finalize a contract.

In response, Councilman Antonio Manuel Rodríguez from the Treasury department explained that the bidding process is currently stuck because the town lacks a designated impound lot. He admitted that the search for a suitable site is still in the early study phase, which has brought the entire project to a standstill.

This ongoing delay is affecting road safety and daily life in the municipality. Without a tow truck, the local government cannot remove abandoned vehicles or effectively enforce parking regulations. The PSOE describes the situation as a series of broken promises, highlighting a chronic struggle within the City Council to manage basic public services and maintain order in public spaces.
