San Juan de la Rambla Residents Threaten Legal Action Over Dangerous Square Infrastructure
The Litoral Neighborhood Association in San Juan de la Rambla is pursuing legal action against the City Council over hazardous drainage grates that obstruct accessibility and cause accidents despite recent municipal budget allocations for infrastructure improvements.
Public space management in San Juan de la Rambla is under fire after the Litoral Neighborhood Association raised concerns about a gap between municipal spending and the actual state of local infrastructure. The group points to the Rosario Oramas square, where faulty drainage systems have become a genuine safety hazard.
The problem stems from the design of 13 storm drains in the area. Their technical layout is prone to trapping wheelchair wheels, bicycles, and skates, leading to accidents. The situation is particularly critical because two of these drains are located on a ramp meant for people with reduced mobility, effectively blocking the very access it was built to provide.
Residents describe the local government’s response as negligent. After filing a formal request with the City Council on October 30, 2025, and receiving no reply, the association reached out to the Tenerife Island Council’s Historical Heritage department on February 16 to seek mediation. So far, neither institution has provided a solution.
This lack of action clashes with the City Council’s recent announcements regarding a €570,000 budget aimed at improving road safety and removing architectural barriers. For the community, this investment feels contradictory when basic infrastructure like drainage grates continues to pose a danger to vulnerable residents.
With no repairs in sight, the association has announced it will pursue legal action. They are offering legal support to anyone injured in the square and have warned that they will not wait for a more serious accident to occur before demanding accountability. The residents’ message is simple: they want immediate technical fixes that ensure public safety and align the council’s actions with its promises.
