San Juan de la Rambla Faces Investigation Over Sewage Leaks in San José

The management of water infrastructure in northern Tenerife is under fire again after the PSOE municipal group in San Juan de la Rambla filed a formal complaint. The party reports that sewage is leaking onto public roads in the San José area, a discovery that has triggered investigations by environmental and security authorities.

The controversy centers on whether the Los Toscales wastewater treatment plant is failing or if there is a break in the local sewage network. Gloria Méndez, the group’s spokesperson, has warned of the health risks posed by raw sewage flowing through the streets and is calling for an urgent technical investigation to find the source. Former mayor Ezequiel Domínguez has also demanded that officials identify who is responsible for this urban pollution.

To force action, the socialists have reported the issue to the Tenerife Island Water Council, the Canary Islands’ environmental protection agency, and SEPRONA. They are demanding that the leaks be stopped immediately and that the Los Toscales plant undergo a full audit to determine if disciplinary action is necessary.

This incident highlights the challenges of maintaining sanitation systems in areas with difficult terrain, where failing infrastructure can quickly become a public health hazard. Environmental regulations require that such discharges be tested to determine their origin and pollutant levels, a process that is now underway.
