San Cristóbal de La Laguna’s ‘Ruta de la Tapa’ Hits Record Participation
The 18th annual "Ruta de la Tapa" in San Cristóbal de La Laguna has launched with a record 47 participating venues, aiming to boost the local economy and promote Canary Island ingredients through a month-long culinary event.
Local food has become the biggest economic boost for the historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The 18th annual "Ruta de la Tapa," held during the San Benito Abad festivities, has reached a record 47 participating venues, cementing its place as a must-visit summer event.
Running throughout July, the event offers a set price of 4 euros for a tapa and a drink. Beyond boosting restaurant sales, the initiative aims to showcase local ingredients and the unique culinary identity of the Canary Islands. The partnership between the City Council, the La Laguna Commercial Zone Business Association (LLZC), and the Rural Management of the Canary Islands (GMR) highlights a strategy to support local businesses and encourage the use of island-grown produce, which is vital for the sustainability of the local farming sector.
The event’s success continues to grow. Last year, the route sold over 208,000 servings, a record organizers hope to beat this year through a new marketing campaign featuring both traditional media and digital content creators. This growth shows how local restaurants are successfully blending tradition with modern culinary techniques.
The event remains interactive, with customers acting as judges via the LLZC mobile app. The app helps users navigate the route and rewards them for participating with chances to win shopping vouchers. The winning tapas will receive gold, silver, and bronze awards, with support from the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands (FAUCA). This reinforces the role of gastronomy as a key tool for tourism and community spirit across the islands.
