San Benito Tapas Route Boosts La Laguna Economy with €500,000 in Sales
The 18th San Benito Tapas Route in La Laguna has generated nearly half a million euros in its first two weeks, underscoring the success of public-private partnerships in boosting the city's summer economy.
The 18th San Benito Tapas Route is proving to be a major boost for La Laguna’s economy, highlighting the success of efforts to revitalize the city’s commercial life. Organizers report that over 125,000 tapas were sold in the first fifteen days alone, generating nearly half a million euros for local hospitality businesses.
This success is the result of a partnership between the La Laguna Commercial Zone Business Association, the Federation of Urban Areas of the Canary Islands, and the local council. The event features 47 establishments offering a tapa and a drink for four euros, a strategy designed to keep business steady during the slower summer months. This model of public-private cooperation is frequently used in historic Spanish cities to encourage local spending and draw visitors to heritage sites.
Local officials are pleased with the results. Fran Hernández from the Commerce department praised the event’s ability to attract large crowds, while Iván Pérez, head of the business association, credited the high quality of the food. The event also includes a digital element, with customers using a mobile app to rate the dishes and act as judges.
The Tapas Route has become a staple of La Laguna’s summer calendar and will continue until July 31st. Its ongoing success shows how a well-organized culinary event can turn everyday dining into a powerful tool for urban economic growth.
