San Andrés Hosts Second Anaga Traditions Market Saturday
The Santa Cruz City Council is hosting the second Anaga Traditions Market this Saturday in San Andrés, showcasing Anaga's culture, local farming, crafts, and traditions with various activities and local products.
The Santa Cruz City Council, working with its Development Society and the Anaga District, is hosting the second Anaga Traditions Market this Saturday. The event aims to showcase the culture, local farming, crafts, and traditions of the Anaga area.
José Manuel Bermúdez, the mayor of Tenerife's capital, announced that this market will turn San Andrés into a lively gathering spot. It will be a place "full of flavor, identity, and dedication," bringing together local producers, artisans, community groups, and others connected to the district's cultural and natural heritage.
Mr. Bermúdez explained that the market will have a wide range of activities for everyone, especially families. Children can enjoy workshops on Canarian traditions, such as the whistling language, traditional Canarian patterns (pintaderas), a Canarian sounds lab, local crafts, popular games, and traditional dances. There will also be two workshops for producers, focusing on planting sweet potatoes and seeds for future crops, led by the Santa Cruz Sostenible Foundation and the Canarian Seed Network.
Carmen Pérez, CEO of the Development Society, said the market not only helps to revitalize the district but also promotes, protects, and shares Canarian traditions and local "kilometer 0" products. She added that the Anaga Traditions Market will feature performances and cultural activities, along with tastings of local products like Anaga cheeses and honeys. These tastings will be led by experts who will explain the value, quality, and origin of the area's produce.
The Anaga Traditions Market will take place around Pedro Schwartz Avenue and the San Andrés Infobox, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entertainment will include performances by the Paiba Folk Group of San Andrés and the Princesa Dácil Folk Group, as well as street parades by the Pentafonías Band. Visitors can also see a juego del palo (Canarian stick fighting) exhibition by the Los Acosta Canarian Stick Fighting School and enjoy the children's show "Cuentajuegos de Güicho."
Ms. Pérez noted that about twenty stands will be set up by producers, artisans, and local groups. Attendees can buy handicrafts, ceramics, honeys, cheeses, traditional pastries, costume jewelry, seedbeds, and farm products. It's also an opportunity to learn about local initiatives and associations, supporting local products and the local economy.
She further highlighted that the Anaga Traditions Market is becoming a key event in the district's cultural calendar. It's part of the 'Enjoy in the Districts' Revitalization Program and helps bring the community together, share Canarian traditions, and strengthen the local culture, society, and economy. The full program is available on the website www.santacruzescomercio.com.
The market is a strategic part of the city's plans to boost commerce and tourism, focusing on unique local products and traditions. It specifically highlights artisans and producers from Anaga who create their goods in traditional ways, making the most of the area's cultural resources.
This year, several organizations are collaborating, including the Anaga Massif Biosphere Reserve, the Canarian Seed Network, and the Santa Cruz Sostenible Foundation. They will offer information about environmental conservation and the natural and cultural heritage of the area. Visitors are encouraged to use public transport to get to the event, as San Andrés is served by TITSA bus lines. Parking is available in the nearby Las Teresitas area.
