Running Out of Fuel Could Lead to Heavy Fines, Authorities Warn
Spanish traffic authorities are warning drivers that running out of fuel can lead to significant fines and dangerous road conditions, urging motorists to prioritize trip planning and avoid the use of unapproved fuel containers.
The RACE has recently issued road safety warnings highlighting that fuel management is now a top priority for traffic authorities. While running out of fuel is not technically a punishable offense on its own, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) and the Civil Guard warn that the consequences of such negligence can lead to significant fines.
The primary concern is road safety. If your vehicle stops in a way that obstructs traffic, you can be fined 200 euros for violating parking regulations. Furthermore, when an engine cuts out, essential systems like power steering and power brakes stop working, making it difficult to control or stop the car safely. If authorities determine that your actions created a dangerous situation, you could face an additional 200-euro fine for negligent driving.
There is also a major financial risk if you try to fix the problem yourself. Many drivers attempt to transport fuel in improvised containers, but using non-approved fuel cans is strictly prohibited and carries heavy fines ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 euros.
To stay safe, authorities emphasize that proper trip planning is essential. Drivers are advised not to push their fuel reserves to the limit. Poor fuel management is more than just an inconvenience; it can trigger a series of errors that put you, your passengers, and other road users at risk. Ultimately, a driver’s responsibility includes preventive maintenance and careful planning to avoid these avoidable technical emergencies.
