Canarian Radio and Television (RTVC) has announced the Ramón Méndez Wrestling Arena in La Frontera, El Hierro, as the special venue for its 2026 New Year's Eve countdown, highlighting its deep connection to Canarian identity and culture.

Canarian Radio and Television (RTVC) has announced that the 2026 New Year's Eve countdown will take place in a very special spot on El Hierro: the Ramón Méndez Wrestling Arena in La Frontera. This location is deeply connected to Canarian identity, the sport of wrestling, and the rich culture of the Canary Islands' westernmost island.

RTVC chose this venue because it holds great symbolic and emotional meaning for the people of El Hierro, as well as significant historical importance. This decision also shows RTVC's dedication to connecting all parts of the Canary Islands, a key part of its public service role.

The Ramón Méndez Wrestling Arena is next to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and often hosts cultural, sports, and community events. It will be the main setting for the broadcast, with the Candelaria bell tower in the background. This bell tower is unique in the Canary Islands because it stands apart from the church building itself.

Pablo Rodríguez Cejas, the mayor of La Frontera, pointed out that the chosen location resonates deeply with the collective memory of El Hierro's residents. He also mentioned the venue's importance for Canarian wrestling and its ties to famous figures like Pollito de La Frontera, a legendary name in the sport.

César Toledo, RTVC's General Administrator, explained that putting on this event requires a lot of technical and logistical effort. He said this effort reflects the organization's commitment to "public service, local connection, and bringing all territories together."

Toledo also highlighted that, for the first time, the New Year's Eve countdown will be broadcast live on La Radio Canaria, reaching even more people and new listeners. This year's hosts will be Eloísa González, Elvis Sanfiel, and Mayer Trujillo, three well-known personalities from RTVC.

RTVC hopes that December 31st will be a celebration of Canarian identity and a chance to highlight El Hierro's beautiful nature and rich culture. The island is famous for its dedication to sustainability and its unique plant and animal life, making it a vital part of the Canary Islands' identity.

RTVC reminded everyone that for centuries, El Hierro was a global landmark because the prime meridian used to pass through it. This historical fact will serve as a symbol for the transition from the old year to the new.

The special New Year's Eve show will start at 10:00 PM, featuring music from Combo Dominicano and Lucrecia. The arena will be set up as a large circular stage with the audience all around it, creating a cozy, joyful, and festive atmosphere typical of a Canarian New Year's celebration.

At 11:30 PM, Televisión Canaria, La Radio Canaria, RTVC's official website, and its social media channels will all go live to join homes across the Canary Islands in counting down to 2026.
