Contemporary Spanish literature has taken a bold step forward with the release of Los onanistas, an ambitious new work by Tenerife-based authors Roberto A. Cabrera and Rafael-José Díaz. Written collaboratively between 2022 and 2024, the 500-page book is structured as a collection of twelve independent notebooks.
The project is intentionally experimental. By alternating authorship for each section, the writers have created a diverse mix of styles and themes, ranging from chronicles and dialogues to essays and erotic prose. The title serves as the common thread, tying these varied fragments together into a cohesive narrative.
The book is the result of a friendship and professional partnership spanning more than three decades. Both authors were born in 1971, yet they have followed distinct creative paths: Cabrera, a philosopher by training, transitioned from poetry to narrative, while Díaz has built a multifaceted career as a poet, essayist, translator, and novelist.
Described as a "book of books," this project marks a significant milestone for both writers. They are scheduled to promote the work with a series of presentations across Spain, including stops in the Canary Islands, Madrid, and Barcelona. With Los onanistas, Cabrera and Díaz are not only exploring new ways to collaborate but are also challenging traditional storytelling by building a complex narrative out of smaller, independent pieces.
