Road Closed in Las Caletillas Following Surface Deformation
A section of the Avenida Marítima in Las Caletillas has been closed to traffic due to structural road deformation, prompting local authorities to implement diversions and bus route adjustments while investigations continue.
A section of the Avenida Marítima in Las Caletillas, Candelaria, has been closed to traffic following the discovery of buckling and deformation in the road surface. The closure affects the stretch between the Las Caletillas fountains and the Esperanza building. While recent stormy weather may have contributed to the damage, local authorities are conducting a technical investigation to confirm the exact cause.
To manage the situation, the Department of Works and Services has implemented the following traffic diversions:
- General traffic: Vehicles heading toward Las Caletillas are being diverted at La Barraca.
- Resident access: Access is restricted to residents of Acaymo, Agarfa, Armiche, Punta del Rey, Tenesedra, and Fayna streets.
- Alternative routes: Residents living on Charco del Musgo, Taunus, Tamonante, Bouganvilla, and Pedro Evangelista must use the highway access near McDonald’s, with Charco del Musgo serving as the primary route.
Public transport has also been affected. TITSA bus routes are now turning back at La Barraca via a detour through Punta Larga, meaning stops between the McDonald’s and the closure point are temporarily suspended. Additionally, the Coastal Circular Line has moved its terminal to the Esperanza building near the Hotel Punta del Rey.
Maintenance crews are currently assessing the underground damage to ensure the road is safe before reopening it. The City Council urges drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution, follow all temporary signage, and avoid the area where possible to allow repair teams to work safely.
