Retaining Wall Collapse in Valleseco Damages Seven Vehicles
A retaining wall collapse in Valleseco, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, destroyed seven vehicles yesterday, prompting municipal authorities to launch emergency stabilization efforts and safety assessments.
A retaining wall collapsed yesterday in the Naranjo Agrio area of Valleseco, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, causing significant damage to seven vehicles. The incident, which occurred near the Casa Amarilla hamlet just after 5:00 p.m., caused three cars to fall from an upper level onto four others parked below.
The collapse has drawn attention to the complex legal status of the area’s infrastructure. While the land’s ownership is unclear, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council considers the road a public right-of-way that falls under its maintenance responsibilities. Despite this ambiguity, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Public Works Councilor Javier Rivero have activated emergency protocols. Firefighters and security teams were deployed to secure the site and assess the stability of the slope, which is part of a recent 20-million-euro municipal sanitation project.
For the dozen residents of this historic settlement, the incident has caused considerable distress. Local neighbors, including long-term resident Rodolfo Machín, noted that the loss of their vehicles is a major blow, as they are essential for getting around this high-altitude part of the city. However, the community is relieved that no one was injured in the collapse. Municipal authorities are now focused on repairing the site and ensuring the area is structurally safe.
