On Monday, rescuers at sea saved 235 people from Africa, including 22 children. They were found 20 kilometers from the island of El Hierro in a boat in which they had been sailing for 11 days.
According to the Maritime Rescue Service, the boat departed from the city of Gunjur in Gambia. There were 149 men and 64 women on board.
People said that they were from different countries: Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Gambia, Mauritania, Guinea Conakry, Ivory Coast and Niger.
The boat was spotted by radar approximately 20 kilometers from La Restinga. Due to the large number of people, two rescue vessels were sent to help.
Due to bad weather, it was not possible to tow the boat, so people were transported on rescue vessels to the port of La Restinga.
