Record-Breaking Binter NightRun Draws 7,000 Athletes to Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The ninth Binter NightRun in Santa Cruz de Tenerife achieved record-breaking attendance with over 7,000 participants while emphasizing sustainability, social inclusion, and charitable giving.
The ninth Binter NightRun in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has hit a historic milestone, drawing over 7,000 athletes and cementing its place as a premier event on the Canary Islands' racing calendar. Organizers noted that this year’s race not only broke attendance records but also highlighted a commitment to sustainability, social inclusion, and strong partnerships between the city council, the Cabildo de Tenerife, and Canary Islands Tourism.
The event was a success both athletically and ethically. In the 10-kilometer race, officially certified by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation, Francisco Cabrera Galindo took first place with a time of 30:40, followed by Raúl González del Toro and Peter Riccardo Santagati. In the women’s category, Alba María Cano Rodríguez won with a time of 38:57, joined on the podium by Itziar Abascal Rivero and Mónica Victoria López Melián. The 5-kilometer race saw impressive gender parity, with women making up 51% of the field; Eduardo Sienes (16:11) and Irene Loizate Sarrionandia (17:51) claimed the top spots.
Beyond the competition, the event focused heavily on social responsibility. The "Family Green Mile" initiative brought together 700 participants, who were able to choose which charities would receive their contributions. In a unique show of solidarity, nearly 1,000 runners opted out of receiving commemorative medals so that the funds could instead be donated to the Foresta Foundation. The event also prioritized inclusion, offering free entry to more than 40 athletes with disabilities.
Organized by DG Eventos, the race implemented strict waste-reduction measures, including the removal of single-use plastics and the promotion of free public transport to lower the event’s carbon footprint. Medical safety was managed by Vithas Canarias, ensuring support throughout the course, which featured various cultural and entertainment activities. With the backing of sponsors like Cicar and Cajamar, the event proved that athletic gatherings can serve as powerful social and economic drivers, turning city streets into vibrant spaces for the community.
