RACE Urges Drivers to Use Air Recirculation for Better Fuel Efficiency and Air Quality
The Royal Automobile Club of Spain is advising drivers to use the air recirculation button to improve fuel efficiency, cabin air quality, and cooling performance during the summer months.
As summer temperatures rise, the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) is reminding drivers how to use their car’s air conditioning more efficiently. A key feature often overlooked is the air recirculation button, which can improve both your vehicle’s performance and your comfort.
When you activate air recirculation, the system stops pulling in outside air and instead cools the air already inside the cabin. Because this air is already chilled, the air conditioning compressor doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain your preferred temperature. This reduces the load on your engine, leading to better fuel economy or, in the case of electric vehicles, a longer driving range.
Beyond efficiency, this setting acts as a shield against pollution. By closing off the outside vents, you prevent exhaust fumes, dust, and other harmful particles from entering the cabin—a major benefit when driving in heavy traffic, through tunnels, or near roadwork. This feature is also useful in winter, as it helps the cabin warm up faster by keeping freezing outside air out.
However, it is important to use this feature responsibly. If you leave recirculation on for too long, the air inside the cabin can become stale, especially if the car is full of passengers. Many modern vehicles are designed to turn this feature off automatically after about ten minutes to prevent this. Additionally, be mindful that using recirculation can sometimes cause condensation to form on the windows, which may reduce visibility if there is a large difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures.
Finally, remember that your air conditioning is only as effective as its maintenance. The cabin filter is essential for keeping the air you breathe clean. If the filter becomes clogged with dust, bacteria, or fungi, it will not only degrade the air quality inside your car but also force the system to work harder. Regular filter replacements are a simple but vital step for your health and your vehicle's performance.
