The Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts is hosting a three-day conference in Santa Cruz de Tenerife exploring the integral role of music in cinematic storytelling through expert lectures and performances.

The Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts (RACBA) is hosting its second conference exploring the vital relationship between visual storytelling and music. The event aims to examine how music functions as a core structural element of film, rather than just background accompaniment.

Supported by the regional government, the conference will be held at the academy’s headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Plaza de Ireneo González. Sessions are free to the public and will take place daily from Wednesday to Friday, starting at 7:00 PM.

The program begins this Wednesday with a technical look at the 1997 film La raya, featuring a discussion between director Andrés Koppel and sound specialist Christian Johansen. On Thursday, expert Conrado Xalabarder will deliver a lecture on the evolution of film music, focusing on how scores act as narrative tools that drive a plot forward.

The event concludes on Friday with a performance by pianist Javier Laso, who will present a recital of Frédéric Chopin’s work, highlighting the composer’s influence on cinema. Through this series, RACBA continues its commitment to exploring the essential role sound plays in the cinematic experience.
