Punta del Hidalgo Fishermen’s Guild Gains Management Control of Local Port

The Punta del Hidalgo fishing port in La Laguna is set for a management shake-up following a new agreement between the regional government and the Nuestra Señora de la Consolación Fishermen's Guild. The deal, which resolves long-standing bureaucratic delays, allows the guild to manage its own infrastructure for an initial four-year term, with the option to extend for another four years.

This change significantly alters how the local artisanal fleet operates. The guild will now directly manage the fish market, storage units, and equipment maintenance areas. While the guild takes over day-to-day operations, the General Directorate of Fisheries will continue to oversee the facility to ensure all regulations are met.

This move fulfills a long-term goal for the fishing community, which has been calling for more control over its own production facilities. During a ceremony on Tuesday, July 28, Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo and Minister of Agriculture Narvay Quintero highlighted that this decentralization is vital for the sector's future.

In addition to the management transfer, the government has introduced a new plan for the port’s slipway. This project aims to reorganize the space to improve safety and efficiency for maritime workers. The initiative is part of a wider effort to give fishing guilds more independence, allowing them to optimize their facilities while still operating under public supervision.
