Punta del Hidalgo Celebrates Virgin of Carmen in Tribute to Maritime Heritage

Preserving maritime traditions in the Canary Islands is about much more than religious ceremony; it is a vital part of the identity and community spirit of coastal towns. The recent procession of the Virgin of Carmen in Punta del Hidalgo once again showcased the deep connection between local residents and the Atlantic Ocean.

The event, held this past Sunday, July 26, drew hundreds of people for a day of faith and cultural celebration. It began at 6:00 p.m. with a service, followed by a procession that carried the image of the Virgin from Olga Ramos Square to the pier. The pier served as the heart of the festivities, featuring musical performances by Miriam Reyes and Nayra González before the nautical portion of the event began. A decorated fleet accompanied the Virgin on a sea route toward Bajamar and Jóver, while singer Chago Melián performed for the crowds back on land.

The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, and the Councilor for Festivities, Dailos González, joined the procession throughout the day. The mayor noted that these gatherings are essential for protecting the collective memory and honoring the families who have built their lives around fishing. The Councilor for Festivities praised the hard work of the organizers and the strong turnout from the public, both of which are key to keeping the tradition alive.

The day ended with the Virgin’s return to her chapel, followed by a fireworks display. These celebrations do more than just strengthen the community; they help revitalize local culture, blending religious devotion with the unique customs that define the coast of La Laguna.
