Puerto de la Cruz Unveils Major Urban Renewal Plan to Bypass Bureaucratic Delays
Tenerife officials have launched a new urban development strategy for Puerto de la Cruz that decouples city planning from port infrastructure to accelerate long-stalled revitalization projects.
The unveiling of the Modernization, Improvement, and Competitiveness Increase Plan 1 (PMM1) marks a major turning point for Puerto de la Cruz. Island officials have announced a new strategy to separate the city’s urban development from port infrastructure projects. By formalizing an agreement with the Canary Islands Government, the Cabildo of Tenerife aims to bypass years of bureaucratic delays that have stalled progress.
Lope Afonso, the island’s vice president and Minister of Tourism, explained that this shift is essential to improving both the quality of life for residents and the city’s appeal to tourists. A key part of the plan involves redesigning the seafront; the current pier parking area will be transformed into a landscaped pedestrian space, reconnecting the Plaza del Charco area with the Atlantic coast.
The plan also includes significant changes to local sports facilities. The El Peñón football field will be relocated to a new, larger sports complex in San Felipe, and the area around the Tenerife Aquatic Sports Center (CDAT) will be landscaped to improve access and natural beauty. Additionally, traffic flow will be improved with a new roundabout designed to simplify access to the coast.
By decoupling urban planning from port regulations—a move that updates the original 2015 plan—the Cabildo hopes to cut through the red tape that has hindered the city’s growth for a decade. Officials believe this streamlined approach will provide Puerto de la Cruz with the modern, functional infrastructure needed to compete in today’s tourism market.
