The Tenerife Island Council and the Canary Islands Government have signed an agreement to decouple Puerto de la Cruz’s urban modernization projects from the local port development, allowing for the immediate advancement of key infrastructure improvements.

The Tenerife Island Council and the Canary Islands Government have signed a new agreement that marks a turning point for urban planning in Puerto de la Cruz. This deal allows for the first update to the city’s 2015 modernization plan, effectively separating the city’s development goals from the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the local port project.

This administrative change follows a February report from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, which highlighted the technical and environmental complexities of the port development. To avoid further delays, local and island authorities have decided to move forward with priority urban projects independently of the port’s timeline.

Managed by the Island Directorate for Strategic Projects, this new framework aims to restart stalled initiatives. Planned improvements include building a new sports complex in San Felipe, upgrading the area around the Tenerife Aquatic Sports Center, improving traffic flow, adding more parking, and reorganizing pedestrian walkways and the maritime park.

Vice President Lope Afonso stated that this roadmap is vital for restoring the city’s competitiveness as a tourist destination. Mayor Leopoldo Afonso emphasized the importance of long-term sustainability, while local departments highlighted that this shift allows the city to regain control over its own development schedule.

This change addresses long-standing requests from residents and aligns with a new model of sustainable tourism for the north of the island. By streamlining these projects, the agreement aims to give Puerto de la Cruz the administrative flexibility needed to improve public spaces and essential services, creating a more livable city that is better prepared for modern environmental challenges.
