Puerto de la Cruz Tourism Faces Volatility Despite June Surge
Despite a strong performance in June, Puerto de la Cruz faces ongoing tourism volatility, with a six-month decline in total visitor numbers despite an overall increase in accommodation revenue.
Puerto de la Cruz is experiencing a mixed performance in its tourism sector, requiring a closer look beyond the recent positive headlines. According to Turismo de Tenerife, the city ended June on a high note, outperforming the island’s overall growth. While Tenerife as a whole saw an increase of 4,281 visitors compared to the same time last year, Puerto de la Cruz welcomed 4,572 more, totaling 81,829 stays. This means one in every five tourists visiting the island in June chose the northern city, accounting for 18.5% of the total market share.
However, this June success—along with a strong start in January and February—masks a more complicated six-month trend. While revenue from accommodation rose by 7% in the first half of the year, reaching 118.6 million euros, the total number of visitors has been inconsistent. From January to June, the city hosted 431,591 guests, a drop of 12,347 compared to the same period in 2024.
The data reveals significant volatility. After modest gains early in the year, the destination saw a sharp decline during the spring, with visitor numbers falling by thousands in March, April, and May.
This pattern highlights the city’s ongoing struggle with seasonality and the need for a long-term strategy to build visitor loyalty. The fact that the city generated more revenue despite fewer visitors suggests a shift in the type of tourist arriving or changes in hotel pricing. As the Canary Islands face increased competition from Mediterranean destinations and broader economic uncertainty, the future of Puerto de la Cruz depends on its ability to move past these fluctuations and turn occasional spikes in interest into steady, year-round growth.
