Puerto de la Cruz to Fund Demolition of Abandoned Bus Station for Urban Renewal Project
Puerto de la Cruz has allocated 5.6 million euros from its own budget to demolish a long-vacant bus station and transform the site into a multifunctional urban hub featuring underground parking and public green space.
Puerto de la Cruz is entering a major turning point in its urban renewal. The City Council has confirmed it will fully fund the demolition of the old bus station, an eyesore that has sat vacant in the city center for 16 years. Because regional funding originally promised for the project fell through, the local government has reallocated 5.6 million euros from its own budget to cover the costs.
The demolition is a complex task due to the building’s size and its location in a busy, high-density neighborhood. David Hernández, the Councilor for Sustainable City, explained that securing this funding was the final hurdle needed to begin the bidding process. The city’s contracting department is now moving forward, with the goal of getting machinery on-site before the current term ends.
The 15,000-square-meter site, located between the Hermanos Fernández Perdigón and Jardinero promenades, has been used as an informal parking lot since the station was closed for safety reasons in 2008. The city’s plan is to transform this space into a multifunctional hub. The project includes a 900-space underground parking garage, new public and private facilities, and an open square designed to bring the community together.
Beyond simply removing an outdated structure, this project is a key part of the city’s strategy to improve its urban layout and expand its green spaces. By modernizing this area, the city aims to turn a long-neglected site into a sustainable, livable landmark that meets modern urban standards.
