Puerto de la Cruz Secures Historic El Polvorín Site with New Fencing
Puerto de la Cruz has installed temporary fencing around the recently restored El Polvorín to prevent vandalism and trespassing while the City Council develops a long-term management plan for the site.
Puerto de la Cruz has taken a significant step toward protecting its historical heritage this week. The City Council has begun installing temporary fencing around El Polvorín to safeguard the building and its gardens.
This move is a preventive security measure following the recent completion of the building’s restoration. David Hernández, head of the Sustainable City department, initiated the project with the support of the municipal commission to prevent vandalism and trespassing while officials finalize a long-term management plan. Protecting the public investment in the site has been a top priority for both technical experts and project managers.
The new perimeter, overseen by Alonso Acevedo of the Works and General Services department, will consist of a durable metal fence with concrete foundations and controlled entry points.
El Polvorín, which is historically linked to the Castle of San Felipe, sat abandoned for years before its refurbishment was finished last year. The City Council eventually plans to transform the site into a cultural and social hub. For now, the building remains closed to the public while the council completes the administrative work required for permanent fencing and establishes a sustainable plan for the site’s future use.
