Puerto de la Cruz Reopens Playa Grande and Charcón Beaches After Water Quality Clearance

Swimmers can return to the water at Playa Grande and Charcón in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, now that health officials have confirmed the water quality is safe. The Canary Islands’ General Directorate of Public Health lifted the swimming ban on September 4, following routine checks that had identified issues on September 3.

The quick resolution was made possible by the city council’s active monitoring program, which has been in place since mid-August. When the initial water tests showed concerning results, the council acted out of an abundance of caution to prioritize public safety. To ensure the water was truly safe, the local government conducted its own independent testing alongside the regional health authority’s guidelines, which ultimately cleared the way for the beaches to reopen.

Mayor Leopoldo Afonso stressed that while the beaches are open, the council will not lower its guard. The local government remains committed to its ongoing safety plan, which includes regular water testing and cleaning of the sanitation network. This preventive strategy has been a priority since August 16 to ensure the long-term health of the municipality’s coastal areas.

The city council thanked the public for their cooperation and for following safety signs during the brief closure. Officials will continue to monitor the water closely in the coming weeks to ensure it remains clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.
