Puerto de la Cruz is seeking bids for a €13 million project to transform La Constitución square, which includes a 333-space underground car park, a new public square, and commercial areas, aiming to revitalize the urban centre and boost the local economy.

Puerto de la Cruz is set to get a major upgrade in La Constitución square, featuring an underground car park with at least 333 spaces, a new public square, and commercial areas. The City Council is seeking bids for this project, valued at 13 million euros. The winning company will be responsible for building and operating the facilities for 38 years, with construction expected to take 24 months.

Following unanimous approval from the city council, companies can submit their proposals until March 3rd. The 40-year contract requires the chosen company to design, finance, build, and operate this infrastructure, fully assuming all financial risks. The total value of this contract over its lifetime is estimated at 106.4 million euros.

The underground car park will primarily serve local residents and businesses. Specifically, 67 spaces (20%) will be available for city centre residents to purchase for 15,000 euros, granting them ownership for 40 years. Another 33 spaces (10%) will be reserved for subscribers. The remaining 233 spaces (70%) will be for general public use, with plans for local businesses to offer special vouchers to their customers, encouraging local shopping.

The project also includes a complete renovation of the square. It aims to maintain its character as a public gathering space and its social function, while also adding compatible commercial options to boost the local economy and strengthen the area as a central hub.

Mayor Leopoldo Afonso (PP) stated that "this project represents a before and after for our urban centre." He believes it will make La Constitución square important again, improve daily life for residents, and strengthen the city's commercial and social heart. Councillor for Administrative Concessions, Pedro Antonio Campos García (PP), added that it addresses a long-standing need for residents and businesses. He believes it combines better transport, public space, and new opportunities, looking to both the present and future of Puerto de la Cruz.
