Puerto de la Cruz Launches Emergency Sewage Pipe Repairs in Punta Brava
Puerto de la Cruz is launching an emergency repair project to replace a corroded sewage pipe in the Punta Brava neighborhood, necessitating temporary traffic restrictions and the use of bypass tankers.
The Puerto de la Cruz City Council and the utility company Aqualia are launching an emergency repair project in the Punta Brava neighborhood to address severe corrosion on a key sewage pipe. Constant exposure to salt spray has caused significant structural wear to the aerial section of the collector, and officials are acting now to prevent potential leaks.
The pipe, a 300-millimeter cast-iron line located behind Calle Añaterve, is suspended on pillars directly over the coastline. Because of this sensitive location, crews will use high-density textile mesh to catch any debris and prevent it from falling into the sea. The most critical part of the project—disconnecting the old pipe and switching to a temporary bypass—must be completed within a seven-hour window. This work is highly dependent on weather conditions, as strong winds and high tides could pose a safety risk to the crew.
To keep the sewage system running during the shutdown, tanker trucks will be deployed to work in coordination with the El Caletón pumping station. This logistical operation will affect local traffic and parking. Parking will be prohibited on Calle Ruimán from 6:00 a.m. on September 29 until 4:00 p.m. on October 1, and on Plaza Manuel Ballesteros from 6:00 p.m. on September 29 until 4:00 p.m. the following day.
This project is part of a broader effort to replace aging infrastructure before it fails. Once the main pipe is replaced, crews will spend the following days finishing minor work on land, such as adjusting manhole covers and pouring concrete, which will not affect sewage flow. Local authorities are asking residents to follow all temporary signage to ensure heavy machinery can move safely and the work can be completed as quickly as possible.
