Puerto de la Cruz Kicks Off 24th Mueca International Street Art Festival
The 24th Mueca International Street Art Festival begins this Thursday in Puerto de la Cruz, featuring a record-breaking 105 performances across the city to celebrate public space and culture.
Starting this Thursday, Puerto de la Cruz becomes a hub for cutting-edge performance art as the 24th Mueca International Street Art Festival kicks off. Organizers say this year’s event is the largest yet, cementing its status as a vital cultural highlight for the Canary Islands.
The festival opens at the Muelle Space with Otto Stragman, a new show by the comedy group Abubukaka. Known for their satirical sketches on current social and political issues, the group will perform at 7:00 PM on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. In line with the festival’s commitment to inclusion, these performances will feature sign language interpretation and magnetic induction loops. Tickets cost two euros and are available through Tomaticket.
This year’s festival is record-breaking, featuring 105 performances by 44 different groups across 20 locations throughout the city. Beyond the shows, the festival encourages community involvement through activities like the PhotoWalk, where attendees can document the event. Participation is free, though registration is required via email, with spots limited to 15 people per session.
The festival offers plenty to explore beyond live performances. The Urban Mueca design market will be open all weekend at the Plaza de la Iglesia, and the Archaeological Museum will host a visual art installation by Sinpromi, featuring works on the building’s railings that explore human emotions.
Mueca is more than just a boost for the local economy; it is part of a broader European movement to reclaim public spaces through culture. By turning streets and squares into natural stages, the festival has become a mature, well-established tradition after more than 20 years.
