Puerto de la Cruz Greenlights €5.3 Million Restoration of Cine Chimisay
Puerto de la Cruz has awarded a 5.3 million euro contract to CAPROSS 2004, S.L. to transform the historic Cine Chimisay into a modern, versatile performing arts venue.
The restoration of the old Cine Chimisay in Puerto de la Cruz has cleared its final administrative hurdle, marking the start of the city’s most ambitious cultural project of the decade. The local council has awarded the construction contract to CAPROSS 2004, S.L., which will transform the aging building into a premier performing arts venue.
The contract, worth approximately 5.3 million euros, covers everything from technical design to final construction. By bundling these services, the council aims to speed up the process; the contractor has three months to finalize designs, followed by a 24-month construction period.
The renovation plans involve a complete reconfiguration of the space. A new triple-height central atrium will connect the floors with a panoramic elevator and a new staircase. The design also focuses on preserving the building's original character, such as its signature facade lattice, while bringing more natural light into the lower levels.
Versatility is at the heart of the new "Espacio Chimisay." The ground floor will feature movable panels, allowing it to host everything from art exhibitions to official events. The main theater will seat about 450 people and will be equipped with modern stage technology, including motorized systems and technical catwalks. To keep operations running smoothly, the building will include separate entrances for performers and staff, as well as a large freight elevator to move scenery without disrupting the audience.
Mayor Leopoldo Afonso highlighted the project as a vital step in diversifying the city’s year-round cultural offerings. Heritage Councilor Pedro Antonio Campos added that the project is more than just a building renovation; it is a necessary investment to boost the city’s cultural standing. With the contract now signed, construction is set to begin, with the venue expected to open following a final month of operational testing once the work is complete.
