Puerto de la Cruz is putting the final touches on its preparations for the Virgin of Carmen festivities, one of the Canary Islands' most important religious and social events. The celebration, which honors the patron saint of fishermen and Saint Telmo, draws thousands of people, requiring significant logistical planning to prepare the port area and decorate the town’s streets.
The Department of Festivities has organized a full program of events, including fishing competitions, folk festivals, and the popular cucaña (greasy pole) contest. Luis Javier González, the councilor for the department, noted that careful planning is essential to ensure public safety while celebrating the town’s cultural identity.
The main day begins at 7:00 a.m. with a morning parade, followed by the first mass at the pier at 9:00 a.m. The highlight of the day occurs in the late afternoon: following a 5:15 p.m. mass and procession, the statue of the Virgin will be carried onto the boat Nuevo San Ramón for a journey through the bay. The religious observances conclude with the singing of the Salve Marinera before the statue is returned to the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia.
Beyond their religious significance, these festivities help strengthen the community and serve as a major tourist attraction for northern Tenerife.
