Puerto de la Cruz Dissolves Museum Board to Modernize Management and Launch Renovations
The Puerto de la Cruz City Council has dissolved the Archaeological Museum’s Board of Trustees to modernize its management structure and facilitate a one-million-euro renovation project.
The Archaeological Museum of Puerto de la Cruz is undergoing a major administrative shake-up, marking a new chapter for the local heritage site. According to the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the City Council has officially dissolved the Board of Trustees that previously managed the museum. This decision, approved by the municipal council on March 30, is now open for public review and feedback for one month.
This change is long overdue, as the museum’s regulations had not been updated since it first opened in 1991. By bringing the museum directly under the City Council’s management, officials hope to replace outdated rules with a more modern, efficient structure that meets today’s public service standards. This transition is also a necessary step toward hiring a new technical director, a role that has been vacant since Juana Hernández retired in November 2024.
Felipe Rodríguez, the councilor in charge, believes this new model will revitalize the institution. The goal is to create a solid administrative foundation to manage a one-million-euro investment from the Government of the Canary Islands. These funds are earmarked for a complete renovation of the museum’s historic building on El Lomo Street and an update to its permanent exhibitions.
Before moving forward, the City Council had to finalize staff stabilization processes, which are now complete. By opening this public consultation period—available at municipal offices and online—the Council aims to move past the operational hurdles that have limited the museum for the last 30 years and transform it into a more dynamic cultural hub.
