Public Transport Use in Tenerife’s Anaga Rural Park Surges 59%
Public transport usage in Tenerife’s Anaga Rural Park has surged by 59% over the past three years, supported by a 16.2 million euro investment and a new strategy to enhance sustainable mobility.
Efforts to reduce reliance on private cars in the Anaga Rural Park are showing clear results. According to the Tenerife Island Council, public transport use in the protected area has jumped by 59% over the past three years. Passenger numbers have risen to over 478,000 annually, up from 300,000 at the start of 2023. The council credits this growth to improved bus services, developed in partnership with the local governments of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna.
Since 2023, the island authorities have invested more than 16.2 million euros into the area. This funding has supported public transport, environmental protection, digital services, and road safety. This year alone, 1.8 million euros has been dedicated to upgrading the Anaga road network, including stabilizing slopes, repaving, and updating signage to help protect the park’s fragile ecosystem.
Looking ahead, the council has introduced a Sustainable Mobility Strategy, which is currently being reviewed by local neighborhood groups. The plan outlines 24 measures and 68 specific actions, covering everything from parking regulations to promoting walking and cycling.
To ensure the plan has community support, the council intends to establish an Anaga Biosphere Reserve Mobility Board once the public consultation period ends. This group will oversee the new measures and coordinate between different government agencies, aiming to balance the protection of the park’s unique natural heritage with the need for public access.
