PSOE Urges Action to Break Bureaucratic Deadlock Stalling Icod de los Vinos Coastal Recovery
The Tenerife Island Council's Socialist group has proposed a new initiative to resolve bureaucratic bottlenecks and accelerate the long-delayed rehabilitation of San Marcos beach in Icod de los Vinos.
Bureaucratic delays stalling the rehabilitation of the Icod de los Vinos coastline have once again sparked political debate in Tenerife. The Socialist group (PSOE) in the Island Council (Cabildo) has formally proposed a plan to unblock the recovery of San Marcos beach, a site that local businesses and residents have long criticized for its ongoing physical decay.
Councilor Javier Rodríguez Medina will lead the initiative, which aims to coordinate the various government bodies responsible for the project. Although the central government’s Directorate General for the Coast and the Sea has already approved the construction plans, the project remains stuck. The PSOE is calling for an end to two specific bottlenecks: the submission of technical documents for environmental assessment and the delay in receiving a report from Puertos Canarios.
Beyond the administrative red tape, the proposal highlights the strategic importance of the coastline. Constant erosion has made the beach less appealing to tourists and left the area more vulnerable to bad weather. The Socialist proposal urges the Cabildo to take a leadership role, ensuring that permits are processed quickly and that the project is financially viable through shared funding between the Canary Islands Government and the island administration.
This situation highlights the difficulty of managing coastal areas, where overlapping state and regional responsibilities often stall regeneration efforts. For the people of Icod de los Vinos, resolving these issues is essential for both local economic recovery and public safety. Despite technical plans being drafted by Gestur years ago, the project has yet to move beyond the planning stage.
