PSOE Proposes Rezoning Las Huertas in Santa Cruz for Public Services Instead of Hotels
The PSOE in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has formally proposed rezoning the Las Huertas plot in San Andrés to prioritize public healthcare, social facilities, and green spaces over hotel development.
Land management in San Andrés is back at the heart of local political debate. The Socialist group (PSOE) in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has submitted a formal proposal for this Friday’s plenary session, aiming to change the zoning of the plot known as Las Huertas.
The initiative, led by PSOE spokesperson Florentino Guzmán, seeks to reverse the current designation of the land—located behind the old military battery—which currently allows for hotel development. Instead, the proposal calls for a complete reorganization of the space to prioritize healthcare and social facilities, green areas, and public parking.
This motion stems from a conflict between current urban planning and the needs of Anaga district residents. The Socialist group argues that the area lacks basic services, making it inappropriate to reserve such a significant plot for tourism.
To move forward, the PSOE is asking the City Council to begin the formal process of modifying the General Urban Development Plan (PGO). The motion also sets a six-month deadline for the Urban Planning Department to complete the necessary technical reports and justifications for the change. This proposal highlights the ongoing tension in Tenerife’s capital between developing the coastline for tourism and addressing the long-standing infrastructure needs of local neighborhoods.
