PSOE Demands Answers Over Stalled Sanitation Works at Tenerife’s Playa Jardín
The PSOE has requested an extraordinary plenary session at the Tenerife Cabildo to demand accountability and a concrete timeline for stalled sanitation repairs at Playa Jardín following recurring microbiological contamination.
The management of water infrastructure in northern Tenerife is back in the political spotlight after the PSOE called for an extraordinary plenary session at the island’s Cabildo. Tamara Raya, the party’s island secretary-general, has formally requested that Cabildo President Rosa Dávila explain the stalled sanitation work at Playa Jardín, a site repeatedly hit by microbiological contamination.
The socialists argue that the situation is critical. Although the island government announced an urgent repair plan for the Punta Brava submarine outfall in March 2025, technical reports from the Island Water Council in June 2026 confirmed that work had not yet started. This delay coincided with a new contamination incident on June 23, which forced health authorities to close the El Charcón area to swimmers.
The controversy involves both the delayed repairs and the handling of the health crisis. The PSOE has criticized the Puerto de la Cruz City Council for a lack of transparency, noting that despite warnings from public health officials, the area was not effectively closed, and the public was not properly informed. However, the party maintains that these local failures do not absolve the Cabildo of its primary responsibility for the island's water infrastructure.
The opposition is now pushing for more than just public statements. Through the extraordinary plenary session, they are demanding clear data on the status of the projects, how much of the budget has been spent, and, most importantly, a firm schedule for completing the work. The socialist group insists that the government must move past rhetoric and provide concrete deadlines to resolve a long-standing problem that threatens both public health and the environment at one of Tenerife’s most popular tourist destinations.
