A 23-year-old man with mental health issues, who was injured during an attack on police officers in La Gomera, has been released on bail but remains in hospital for treatment.

A 23-year-old man with mental health issues has been released on bail but remains in the hospital. On Monday, he attacked police officers and civil guards on the island of La Gomera and was shot three times before being apprehended.

The man's lawyer, María Luz Vera, said that the court made the decision on Wednesday, and she was informed of it at the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria Hospital.

The lawyer reminded that the young man, Aitor Peraza, underwent surgery due to serious injuries from three gunshot wounds.

The young man was detained on Monday in the town of San Sebastián de La Gomera for attacking police officers. He fought violently with a female Civil Guard officer and a local police officer. He is currently in a hospital in Tenerife, where he was taken on the day of the incident.

According to the lawyer, the recovery will be long. Vera explained that Aitor was resuscitated while waiting for an examination in the emergency room.

The lawyer believes that the policewoman, by using her weapon, endangered not only Aitor's health but also the safety of people who were nearby on the street.

She also added that she would show a video that confirms this. In her opinion, the decision to shoot was "excessive, reckless, and violated all rules of engagement."

María Luz Vera Morales explained that Aitor's parents contacted the 1-1-2 emergency service to help persuade their son to take his medication.

He had not taken his medication for several days, was very agitated, restless, and pacing around the house.

An ambulance arrived at the scene. But for unknown reasons, after or during the administration of the medication, the young man ran out into the street.

Then the local police and Civil Guard began searching for him in the streets to calm him down.

A video circulating on social media shows Aitor fighting violently with a female Civil Guard officer and a local police officer. All three fall to the ground.

After a few seconds, the young man manages to break free. And at some point, he takes a telescopic baton from the policewoman. This baton can cause serious injury or even death if used to strike forcefully, for example, on the head.

According to information from the professional association of the Civil Guard, the policewoman drew her weapon and shot Aitor in the legs when she felt cornered and her life was in danger, as the young man allegedly swung the baton at her.

According to sources, the policewoman suffered three broken ribs, several blows, and a bite on the arm from Aitor.
