Protected Sun Parakeet Found in Tenerife, Owner Sought
A protected sun parakeet, found in La Orotava, Tenerife, has been at the Neotrópico Foundation's Wildlife Rescue Center since November 3rd, awaiting its rightful owner due to its CITES Appendix II status.
A ringed sun parakeet (Aratinga solstitialis) has been at the Neotrópico Foundation's Wildlife Rescue Center (CRAS) since November 3rd.
The bird was found in La Orotava, Tenerife. The organization announced on social media that it was brought to the center thanks to help from the public.
Sun parakeets are a protected species under CITES Appendix II. This means it's illegal to own one without proper legal documents, such as an invoice or a transfer letter. The bird must also have a closed ring or a microchip.
Because of these rules, the Neotrópico Foundation cannot offer exotic animals for adoption to private individuals. Therefore, the parakeet can only be returned to its rightful owner. If the owner doesn't come forward, the parakeet will stay at the CRAS Neotrópico. It will live in a large aviary with other sun parakeets.
The foundation also used its social media to remind the public of its ongoing work. This includes protecting nature in the Canary Islands, conducting research, conserving biodiversity, promoting animal welfare, raising awareness, and educating people about the environment. They also fight against illegal wildlife trade and invasive exotic species.
Since 2005, the Neotrópico Foundation has also been involved in developing eco-friendly farming, promoting a circular economy, and producing local food to help the region become more self-sufficient.
