Prosecutors Increase Prison Demands in Tenerife Burglary Trial
The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has suspended the trial of five defendants accused of a string of burglaries after the prosecution significantly revised its requested prison sentences.
The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is nearing the end of a trial involving five defendants accused of a string of burglaries across 21 homes between late 2023 and last spring. As the case concludes, the Public Prosecutor has significantly changed the requested prison sentences.
While the legal charges remain the same, the prosecution has hardened its stance on the severity of the crimes. The requested sentence for one defendant has more than doubled, jumping from five years to ten and a half, while another now faces twelve years. Conversely, the prosecution slightly reduced the requested sentences for two other men to four years each, while the fifth defendant faces eight years.
The trial, which began last Monday, involves a complex list of charges, including burglary, drug offenses, violent acts, and illegal possession of weapons. Because these crimes do not apply equally to all five men, the court previously agreed to separate certain aspects of the case to ensure each defendant is judged fairly based on their specific involvement.
The most recent court session ended with a delay. Following the prosecutor's updated sentencing requests, one defense lawyer asked for more time to adjust their closing arguments. To ensure a fair trial, the judge suspended the proceedings, which are set to resume today. The case highlights the difficulties of managing complex trials with multiple defendants and overlapping charges, where legal strategies can shift rapidly as a verdict nears.
