Príncipe Felipe Cultural Center Secures €235,000 for Upgrades
The Tenerife Island Council has approved an additional 235,000 euros for the Príncipe Felipe Cultural Center in Tegueste to fund accessibility, safety, and functionality improvements, including an accessible ramp, adapted bathrooms, and fire safety upgrades.
The Príncipe Felipe Cultural Center in Tegueste, home to the well-known Príncipe Felipe Theater, is set to receive an additional 235,000 euros for improvements. The Department of Culture and Museums of the Tenerife Island Council approved this extra funding for the facility, which is one of the municipality's main cultural venues and part of the 2016-2029 Cultural Infrastructure Plan.
Of this amount, 211,356 euros will come from the Island Council, with the remaining 23,484 euros contributed by the City Council, as explained by Tenerife's Vice President, Lope Afonso.
Mr. Afonso stated that the need for more funding comes from new requirements identified in the building. These changes make it crucial to continue improving the accessibility, safety, and functionality of this cultural space, which is vital to Tegueste's social and cultural life.
Specifically, the funds will pay for an accessibility and adaptation project. This includes installing an accessible ramp, creating adapted bathrooms for people with limited mobility, and redesigning the entrance to the Municipal Library. Additionally, the fire safety systems of the Príncipe Felipe Theater will be upgraded and brought up to standard, making the building safer and ensuring it meets current regulations.
"This isn't a new project, but rather an extension of an already approved intervention," Afonso added. "It adapts to current needs and ensures the cultural center meets the accessibility, comfort, and safety standards citizens expect."
Tegueste's Mayor, Norberto Padilla, welcomed the decision. He noted that the project was first requested between 2015 and 2019. Its aim is to improve the building's accessibility, renovate existing bathrooms to make them suitable for people with limited mobility, and create a new entrance for the public library, which is located on the second floor. "This is necessary funding that we greatly appreciate from the Island Council," he highlighted.
Lope Afonso reminded everyone that the main goals of the Cultural Infrastructure Plan are to restore and improve the island's cultural facilities, update buildings to meet current legal requirements, and increase their social and cultural value. "With this budget increase, we reaffirm the Island Council's commitment to our municipalities and to providing accessible, safe, and quality culture for everyone," he said.
The work will follow the Plan's guidelines, with a deadline of September 10 this year for the completion of the 2025 phase of the project, and November 10 for reporting on its completion. The Island Council noted that this continues its progress in modernizing the island's cultural infrastructure, creating more inclusive spaces better equipped to meet the community's cultural needs now and in the future.
In related news, the Tenerife Island Council recently announced it will invest over one million euros this year in the Mencey Tegueste Wrestling Arena. This is a specific grant the Island Council will provide to the Tegueste City Council to renovate one of the main facilities for this traditional Canarian sport. Vice President Lope Afonso assured that the Island Council will continue "working to consolidate traditional local sports as a key part of our identity."
