The Partido Popular (PP) in Tenerife is restructuring its local branches in Granadilla de Abona and Arona to strengthen its presence ahead of future elections. Led by island party head Lope Afonso, these changes aim to provide more stability and a clearer direction for the party’s southern strongholds.

In Granadilla de Abona, the party has formed a new management committee led by Marcos Rodríguez. Rodríguez is a notable figure, having previously left a coalition with the PSOE in 2025 to lead a motion of no confidence against his former partners. He will be joined by secretary Nicolás Barrera and committee members Nereyda González, Damelis J. Santos, and Nahuel Ceballos. Their primary goal is to unite the party locally by listening to members and building a shared strategy.

Meanwhile, the PP has begun the process of renewing its leadership in Arona by forming an organizing committee for its local assembly. Rafael Martínez, who is leading this committee, has set a new requirement for anyone wishing to run for local leadership: candidates must secure at least 59 endorsements from local party members. The leadership states this rule is intended to ensure that future leaders have genuine support and are fully committed to the role.

These moves are part of Lope Afonso’s broader plan to professionalize the party across Tenerife. By using management committees and stricter endorsement processes, the island leadership hopes to prevent internal divisions and ensure that local branches are well-prepared for their work in local government.
