The Popular Party has formally requested that the Spanish government bolster police resources and establish a permanent security station in Granadilla de Abona to address the rapid population growth and logistical demands of southern Tenerife.

Security in the south of Tenerife is now a key topic in parliament following a proposal from the Popular Party (PP). Deputy Juan Antonio Rojas has called for a major overhaul of police resources in the region, specifically requesting a permanent National Police or Civil Guard station in Granadilla de Abona.

The PP argues that current police resources no longer match the area’s rapid growth. While the official population of Granadilla is 65,000, the number of residents and tourists often exceeds 80,000. This pressure is compounded by the area’s strategic importance, which includes Tenerife South Airport, the port of Granadilla, and a planned Free Trade Zone.

Marcos Rodríguez, the first deputy mayor of Granadilla, has confirmed that the local government is ready to help. The City Council has already identified a site in San Isidro with easy access to the southern highway, which they are prepared to offer to the Ministry of the Interior for the new facility.

Beyond new buildings, the proposal calls for a complete review of staffing and equipment. Deputy Rojas highlighted serious concerns regarding passport control at Tenerife South Airport, noting that overcrowding there harms the island's reputation as a tourist destination and creates security gaps that could be exploited by organized crime, including drug and human trafficking.

Ultimately, the PP is urging the central government to assess current staffing levels and increase the number of officers. The goal is to ensure that police presence in the south of the island is strong enough to handle the region's complex logistical and population demands.
