The port authority has blocked the project to restore the old hydrotherapy clinic in Santa Cruz de Tenerife into a modern medical center due to its proximity to the port of Los Llanos.

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there were plans to restore the old hydrotherapy clinic on the San Andrés highway and turn it into a modern medical center called "Anaga." However, the Port Authority blocked the project.

They sent a report to the Canary Islands government (which currently owns the building) stating that a hospital was not suitable for this location. They argued that the site was too close to the Los Llanos port and would interfere with its operations.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, had proposed as early as December 2023 to transform the hydrotherapy clinic into a health center for the entire district, replacing the old Casa del Mar. He even secured funding for the building's reconstruction from the 2024 budget.

The government initially promised €100,000 to start the work and turn the ruins into a useful place for people. But, according to the mayor, it now seems that nothing will come of the hospital.

Bermúdez explained that the Port Authority stated that a medical facility could not be built here due to its proximity to the port. Therefore, he will ask the government to find another solution. After all, the money has already been allocated, the project has started to be developed, and then this report comes out!

The mayor added that a decision now needs to be made about what to do with the building. He suggests turning it into something useful for local residents: if not a hospital, then at least a social or sports center.

Bermúdez assured that the city authorities are ready to cooperate with the government and local residents to find the best solution for this building.

The hydrotherapy clinic was built in the early 20th century near beaches and pools. Previously, thousands of people vacationed here. It was a beautiful building in the style of the 1930s. But then the port was expanded, and the hydrotherapy clinic ended up far from the sea. It was closed in 1992.
