The visit of Pope Leo XIV to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on June 12 generated 5.71 million euros for the local economy, demonstrating the city's capacity to successfully host large-scale international events.

Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Santa Cruz de Tenerife on June 12 was more than a spiritual occasion; it provided a significant financial boost to the city. According to a report by the City Council’s Development Society, the event generated 5.71 million euros, proving that the capital has the logistical capability to host large-scale, complex events.

The economic impact was spread across several areas: visitors spent 3.04 million euros directly, while indirect and induced effects—such as supply chain activity and spending by event staff—added another 1.35 million and 1.32 million euros, respectively. For every euro spent by a visitor, an additional 0.88 euros was generated for local businesses.

A survey of 961 attendees showed that the event drew nearly 47,600 people. While 92% of the crowd were local residents, the event also attracted visitors from across Spain and countries including Germany, Venezuela, and Colombia. Transportation was largely sustainable, with 41% of attendees walking and 45% using public transport, which helped keep traffic congestion to a minimum.

On average, each person spent 79.63 euros, primarily in restaurants, which saw 1.11 million euros in sales. The Plaza de España served as the main hub for this activity. While only 13% of attendees stayed in paid accommodation, those who did often chose high-end hotels, providing a further boost to the tourism sector.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that these results confirm the city’s strategy of using large events to revitalize the local economy. City officials noted that tracking these figures is essential for justifying future investments in infrastructure. Beyond the financial data, the event was well-received by the public, with 94% of residents following the coverage and expressing pride in the prestige the visit brought to the city.
