Pope’s Upcoming Spain Visit Sparks Surge in Commemorative Merchandise
The upcoming papal visit to Spain has triggered a surge in commemorative merchandise, featuring a mix of official institutional products and independent charitable collections aimed at supporting local social projects.
Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to Spain has sparked a surge in commemorative merchandise, creating a diverse market that goes well beyond religious souvenirs. Official products are sold exclusively through El Corte Inglés, while various church groups and private organizations are running their own independent sales, leading to a wide range of prices and goals.
The official collection, titled "Lift Your Gaze," ranges from €1.95 for items like bracelets and pennants to €19.95 for polo shirts. These products are available online and in select stores, with 10% discounts offered on bundles. Proceeds from these sales are intended to cover the costs of the papal visit, with any remaining funds donated to Casa León in La Laguna, a Cáritas project supporting the homeless and migrants.
Meanwhile, the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is selling its own items through Casa Mesa under the theme "Friendship Can Change the World." This collection features t-shirts, magnets, pens, and books at lower prices than the official line. They are also clearing out stock from the previous Virgin of Candelaria pilgrimage. Additionally, the firm Serrah Studio is selling hand fans to help fund local youth travel to World Youth Day in Seoul and to support Cáritas.
Other groups, such as the Neocatechumenal Way, are also selling their own branded t-shirts and caps to mark the group's 60th anniversary and the canonization process of Carmen Hernández.
This mix of mass-market merchandise and local parish sales highlights the excitement surrounding the Pope’s visit, which will take place from June 6 to 12 with stops in Madrid, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife. Whether buyers choose official institutional items or local charitable alternatives, the visit is clearly serving as a major driver of economic and social activity across the host regions.
