Pope’s Tenerife Visit Forces Cancellation of Tenerife Music Festival Opening Day
The Tenerife Music Festival has cancelled its opening day on June 12 to accommodate security measures and crowd control protocols mandated by the Canary Islands Government for Pope Leo XIV’s visit.
The upcoming visit of Pope Leo XIV to Tenerife has disrupted the island’s cultural calendar. To manage the large crowds expected for the visit, the Canary Islands Government has activated the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan (PLATECA). This safety measure has forced the cancellation of the first day of the Tenerife Music Festival.
The decision affects all shows scheduled for Friday, June 12, at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife port. As a result, performances by Rels B, Nathy Peluso, and El Arrebato have been cancelled. Additionally, all technical work, including sound and lighting checks, is prohibited between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. that day.
PLATECA is activated to ensure public safety and manage crowd control during major events. Because the festival coincides with the Pope’s visit, organizers were required to adjust their schedule to meet regional government safety standards.
For now, the cancellation only affects Friday. The festival is expected to continue as planned on Saturday, June 13, with performances by Pablo Alborán, Camilo, Ana Mena, and Iván Ferreiro. The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife confirmed the suspension, noting that security measures must be coordinated with the Pope’s official schedule.
